这只来自广州的葡萄酒执壶铭文刻上：
“Presented to Bernard Rodyk Esq by Hoo Ah Kay Whampoa in grateful recognition of kind and valuable services rendered to the donor, Singapore, June 1873”.

Hoo 在 1830 年从黄埔（广州的造船船坞）移居到新加坡，是第一位驻当地的中国兼任日本和俄罗斯领事；在 1869 年更成为第一位进入新加坡立法会的亚洲人。在新加坡更有一条河和一个地区是以 Hoo 命名。而 Rodyk 是第一位为 Hoo提供服务的律师。

The "Whampoa" Claret Jug:
This hand-embossed Chinese Export Silver Claret Jug owned by Stephen J. Potash of California, USA, is of historial interest to Singapore.

Standing 37.5cm, it was made by a Chinese silversmith in Canton between 1850-1870. it is inscribed "Presented to Bernard Rodyk Esq by Hoo Ah Kay Whampoa in grateful recognition of kind and valuable services rendered to the donor, Singaproe, June 1873".

The donor, Hoo Ah Kay (1815-1880), who came to be known as "Whampoa", was one of the pioneer civic leaders of Singapore. Born in Whampoa, China, he came to Singapore in 1830 to assist his father in the ship chandlery business.He learned English and soon became one of the leading businessmen of the day.In recognition of his many charitable and community services, in 1860 he become the first Asian to be appointed to the Singapore Legislative Council.He also served as the first Consul in Singapore for Russia, China and Japan.A road, a river and a district are named after him.

Bernard Rodyk, recipient of the claret jug, was one of the founders of Rodyk and Davidson, Singapore's oldest law firm.
